Patch for April 2018 Update sends Windows 10 into infinite boot loop

Windows 10 will let you Alt+Tab between browser tabs and apps

However, Microsoft has not released a firm arrival date for the fix.

Vulnerable software includes Microsoft's Edge and Internet Explorer browsers, as well as its Office, Exchange and Outlook software. Neither vulnerability was exploited in the wild. Microsoft also snuck in there the ability to highlight words or phrases in Notepad and search using Bing.

The zero-day attack targeted victims via malicious Microsoft Word documents. This had allowed people to force Internet Explorer to load, no matter what browser someone was already using. CVE-2018-8174 affects not only IE but also any other projects that embed the IE web rendering engine.

The attack exploit could also be targeted via malicious advertisements, or malvertising (see Online Advertising: Hackers' Little Helper). Sets now has an acrylic title bar, for all of you who see/appreciate Microsoft's new Fluent Design. The bug, designated as CVE-2018-8120, is being exploited in the wild. Microsoft has pushed updates to many systems with Intel SSDs, however the company suggests to roll back to Windows 10 version 1709.

Adobe credits discovery of the "critical" flaw, designated CVE-2018-4944, to Jihui Lu of security research group Tencent KeenLab (see 2016 Resolution: Ditch Flash).

Windows 10 will receive a "future" update to address the issue, at which point users with Intel SSDs can migrate to the April 2018 update.

As outlined in a recent Microsoft Answers post, systems with certain Intel-branded solid state drives may enter a UEFI screen reboot or crash repeatedly when upgrading to the Windows 10 April 2018 build. Microsoft chalked it up to a known incompatibility issue that can cause stability and performance issues. Business users can continue to receive security-only updates for six months, Microsoft says, or organizations can pay for pricey extended-support contracts.
